University of Southern Mississippi (USM)

The British Studies Program, founded in 1976, is organized by Southern Miss through an academic consortium of colleges and universities. The program offers ten to fifteen different courses in various disciplines. Students will take one course and earn six credit hours through lectures taught by British scholars, artists, business leaders, and government officials, and through field excursions to various locations in and around London. On British Studies, London becomes the students’ classroom as they experience their subject first-hand and conduct research supervised by their professor.

London Explore
London Explore begins arrival weekend and continues throughout the program on Thursday evenings. Students are guided by veteran faculty and staff through London on group outings. Students will begin to learn how to navigate London’s transportation system and will be exposed to London’s hottest tourist spots as well as to little-known gems.

Weekend Explore
After the first week in England, students will have the opportunity to travel over the weekend. Below are some of the optional Weekend Explore experiences.

  • Take a day trip to Stonehenge and Winchester.
  • Plan your own adventure with new friends to other nearby cities.

Mini-Break!
British Studies features a four-day “mini-break” during the third weekend of the program.

  • Join the group on some optional days trips to Windsor or Brighton.
  • Plan your own small group travel to easy-to-visit European cities like Paris, Berlin, or Dublin.
  • Stick around London and continue checking off the bucket list.

Housing
Students’ home for the summer will be in the University of Westminster’s Marylebone residence hall. The residence hall provides single occupancy rooms with common kitchens and laundry facilities. The residence hall is right in the heart of historic London with easy access to shops, cafes, restaurants, and various markets all within walking distance to numerous tourist sights. Staff and faculty reside alongside students in the halls of residence.

Flight Option
Airfare is not included in the cost of the program. However, we do offer a group flight option departing out of either New Orleans, Jackson, Charleston and Dallas on TBA and returning from London on TBA. If students wish to fly with the group, they must opt-in by the application deadline. This option can be selected in the application. Group flight cost $TBA. The group flight includes pick up and drop off at the London Heathrow airport.
