Queens Park Rangers Experience by Giselle Garcia

While we were in London we visited the Queen’s Park Rangers Football Club. We visited their stadium and met their community outreach coordinator Justin. Justin and the whole crew at Queens Park Rangers were very welcoming and made sure we were having the best experience they had to offer. QPR is a smaller football team in London in one of the lesser tiers of the English football league. Their team had been having a rough season with 20 straight losses and new coaches mid season. However, that didn’t draw back on our experience at QPR. The day of the football match we were invited out to the stadium early to see all the fun activities they had set up for families before the game. They gave us a food voucher and made us feel at home. The day before the game, Justin had asked our group if we wanted to wave the flags on the field for the players before the game. Of course we said yes and made our debut on British television. Thirty minutes before the game we were escorted down to the pitch (British term for soccer field) and were given the flags waiting in anticipation for the players to come out of the tunnel and the game to start. The stadium was packed and the sun was shining through the clouds which is not typical for a winter day in London. Finally we were lined up one by one making a path for the players to walk out. It was a great experience to be out on the pitch with all of the players. I’m glad we were offered the chance to be involved in the game and were treated as if we were a part of the community. After the flag waving we sat down to watch the game in the freezing cold. However it was worth it, QPR scored a goal in the first half and held off the other team until the very end winning the game 1-nil (1-0) breaking their losing streak. I’d like to think that we were their good luck charm.
