First Week in Trujillo by Jillian Kabik

I just arrived in Spain last week, and I am already having the time of my life. I was super nervous about going on the Trujillo program, as I didn’t know anyone else who was going. While the thought of not knowing anyone was daunting, I’m glad that I was able to come in with zero expectations and have the chance to make new friends. I have made so many friends just this past week; I feel so connected to everyone in the group! Everyone is so nice and we are all here for the same purpose: to learn the Spanish language and culture.

Already, I have felt my Spanish improving. Every night, I lay in bed and try to think about how to say something new. When I don’t know how to say something, I try to explain what I’m trying to say. I try to use new words and explanations to get around what I don’t know. It’s exhilarating when someone finally understands you. I can’t wait for classes to start so I can learn even more!

Every night for the past few days, I have gone out with the rest of the students on the trip. We have danced at clubs, ate at restaurants, gone shopping, and even had a picnic at a castle. Did I mention that our classes are literally next to a castle? It’s crazy! I feel so lucky!

I truly cannot believe that I’ve been here for less than a week. I feel like Trujillo is already a place I can call home. For anyone who is nervous about studying abroad, don’t be. Though it will be scary in the beginning, it gets so much easier so quickly—I promise. I’ve spoken to the other students and they all feel the same way that I do. I haven’t even experienced much yet, but I’m already having the best time ever! I will keep you updated with my next adventures!
