  1. Maps.me– Guys, this is a LIFE-SAVER!!! Maps.me is an offline maps app that allows you to get directions when you have no service. If you were like me and too stubborn to buy a data plan abroad, being able to download a map of the city when you have wifi and then use it as you explore around completely unplugged. Whether you need GPS only in emergencies or you rely on it 24/7, maps.me is an app you need to have.

2. WhatsApp– No matter where you go, you can talk to anyone anywhere in the world for FREE! WhatsApp is a communications app that runs off wifi. You are able to message, call, and video chat anytime you have wifi! There is no need to have a phone plan with high priced international calling to talk to your family and friends back home. Instead use WhatsApp to stay in touch for free!

3. Flush Toilet Finder– After venturing around new city all day and tasting a bunch of local foods and beverages, a bathroom break is usually needed. In some countries, however, public bathrooms can be hard to find. This is when Flush Toilet Finder comes in handy! With Flush, you are able to search for the closet bathroom with no internet connection necessary. It will even tell you how much the bathroom costs, if not free.

4.  HostelWorld.com– For traveling on a budget during breaks or weekends, HostelWorld has very cheap housing options in pretty much every city. It is very easy to search and book through the app. One bit of advice, READ THE REVIEWS because while most are hostels are good, there are definitely a few out there that are not worth your money. As long as you do a bit of research, HostelWorld is a convenient and cheap way to find a place to stay. 

5. Journo– You do so many cool things while studying abroad, it is so hard to keep track! That is why Journo is a great app to have. It is an electronic journal that allows you to type memories, upload photos and videos, and can even keep track of specific places you visited with their location tool. Journo is a super helpful way to preserve all of the fun memories you make abroad! 

6. XE Currency– XE Currency is perfect to know how much you are actually spending! It is a currency converter that constantly updates, so you know how much something is in comparison to the USD at anytime. It even saves the last update, so you can check on the go when you are offline. 

7. Google Translate– If you are headed to a non-English speaking country, Google Translate can be a life-saver! Whether trying to read an item at a grocery store or trying to communicate with a local, Google Translate is an easy way to lessen the language barrier.
