Jan Brewton, Business and Auxiliary Services

Briefly describe your role.

I am the Director of Business and Auxiliary Services. I oversee all of the auxiliaries except for Residence Life as well as Mail Services, the Sottile Theatre, leases and lease-outs and all of the insurance for the College.

What is the function of your department?

We coordinate and manage all aspects of the major auxiliary contracts as well as the campus auxiliary services that provide services to the College community. Our job is to ensure that the auxiliaries are self-sustaining and provide a high level of service. We run our departments as small businesses. The Sottile Theatre in particular has been a wonderful learning experience and we are hoping to eventually have a season for both the College and the Charleston community!

How long have you been working at the College?

Ten years this year. It is really hard to believe that time has passed so quickly!

What brought you to the College?

I was incredibly lucky! After 21 years in finance at a high tech company, I “retired” to Folly Beach.  After nine months of working around the house it was clear that I was not cut out to stay at home. I started in special projects in Business Affairs and moved into this position in 2003.

What do you like most about your job?

The scope and diversity is incredible. Every day brings a different challenge!  In particular I enjoy having both financial and operational responsibilities. Having started my career in finance I love forecasts and trend analysis. Okay – that sounds sort of geeky.

What are some of your favorite memories from the College?

Working in Randolph Hall and walking around the campus every day. And seeing the carriage tours stop in front of Porter’s Lodge. It is just surreal. I love being a local in a tourist town.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love to travel and over the years have been to France, Italy — many times! — Greece, Mexico, Canada, Japan, China, and Hong Kong.  The Caribbean Islands have also been a favorite vacation spot. At home I am an avid gardener and reader. Cooking (with wine of course) is also a favorite pastime.

What is something that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?

I love to body board! Folly has the best waves!
