BABEL poem

“Babel” by Rae Armantrout

“Let us go down
and confuse their language
so we may distinguish
the people
from our thoughts.”

*

Could it be true
that the baby is afraid
his wish
to gobble us up
has been realized
already?

*

Hard to say
since we’ve thrown our voice
into the future
and the past.
