Stephanie Auwaerter was the recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Staff Member Presidential Service Award.  She was presented with this prestigious award at the Annual Staff Celebration lunch in June for her collaborative efforts, engagement, and contributions throughout the campus community.

As the Director of Orientation in the Office of New Student Programs, Stephanie is responsible for planning and implementing student and family orientation, coordinating the orientation internship experience for CofC students and working on the various projects involving new students.

CofC Writing Lab Director Receives Achievement Award

Green Zone Training

Cougar Countdown December 2018

Cougar Countdown begins Tuesday, 12/4 with its traditional kick-off events–Ask a Prof! and Cougar Cookout—and also the Charleston Bridge program- sponsored brunch on the Green to support the Bridge students on their first day of exams. The famous Moonlight Breakfast will also be held that night at 10 pm in Liberty Fresh Foods (this is a meal swipe event through dining services).  We will see the return of Pancakes with the President with President Osborne on Wed 12/5, and the ever-popular Stress Relief Fair featuring MANY huggable dogs, loads of stress-relieving activities, and healthy snacks. And of course daily coffee breaks, Zumba, yoga, and limited tutoring in the evening at the CSL! How it works: “Advise Me” is a mobile texting platform that allows students to ask advising questions by texting in to the Academic Advising and Planning Center (AAPC). They will receive fact-based answers from the AAPC Peer Advisors. Students can text “adviseme” to 85511 with advising questions. Students are able to text in their questions anytime and can expect a response within 24 business hours (except during holiday breaks). Peer Advisors respond through an online Prevention Pays program from our AAPC office computers.

What kind of questions will be answered: This is a fact based advising texting service, meaning the questions can include but are not limited to learning about campus support services and resources, making appointments, asking about class schedules and prerequisite course, and interpreting Degree Works. Good questions for the Advise Me texting service could include “What time do I register for my classes,” “How many humanities credits do I need to graduate,” or “How do I declare my academic major.” If a question is not able to be answered over text and needs more in-depth explanation, students are encouraged to attend Quick Question Drop In (QQDI) Monday through Friday from 2pm to 4pm or make an appointment with their academic advisor.

Why created: The platform was created to help students who live on and off campus get answers to their quick advising questions. Student turnout for QQDI hours have been great! However, many students are still unable to make it during QQDI hours or our prior evening on campus hours for Mobile Academic Advising. We also learned about Prevention Pays from Rachael McNamara, who has trained CASAS’ Cougar Counseling Team to use this texting platform as well. They have seen much success with this platform and we hope to see the same! For these many reasons, the Peer Advising program in the AAPC has created the Advise Me text in service. Students can now get their advising questions answered without having to be present between specific hours of the day. Spread the word!

Commuter News

There are new commuter lockers in the basement of the Lightsey Center.  They are located just past the B01 conference room.  There are 18 semester lockers and 15 daily lockers that commuter students can access at no cost.  In addition, the Commuter Student Lounge (CLB1) and the Commuter Student Break Room (CLB2) are both available.  In the break room, students will find a refrigerator, Keurig and microwave that is ready for use.  Questions concerning the lockers or break area can be directed to Jennifer Bradley in the Center for Excellence in Peer Education.

Veteran and Military Student Center

The Veteran & Military Student Center opened its door to students on August 21 in the Lightsey Center Basement, Suite B24 (where Auxiliary Services was previously located). The new center serves as a place for veteran and military students to connect, relax, or study. It offers a large lounge area with couches, a television, and coffee makers with free coffee, as well as a separate computer lab and study area with six new computers.

The Veteran & Military Student Center is fully staffed and houses Jessica Wilkes, Program Director of Veteran & Military Student Services, Mat Garrison, Coordinator for Veteran, Military and ROTC Recruitment and Admissions, and Charles West, VA VITAL Coordinator. Jessica is the veteran and military student central point of contact. She can assist students with any questions they have, in addition to locating the appropriate resources and services they may need. Not only does she assist veteran/military students but she also assists faculty/staff with questions or concerns they may have regarding students. Mat is the first stop in the application process for veteran and military students that wish to attend the College of Charleston. He evaluates previous college credits and is the on-campus Joint Services Transcripts (JST) expert. In addition to admissions, he also works in conjunction with Jessica assisting students with any issues, questions, or concerns they have. He is now located in the Veteran & Military Student Center in Room B25.  Charles West is the campus VA VITAL Coordinator and his office is located in B26 within the new center. He assists students with signing up for VA healthcare, contacting providers, obtaining referrals, and provides counseling to veteran students.  Charles West’s office hours vary so contact the VMSS office regarding for his availability.

REACH Director Honored by South Carolina Governor

2017-2018 Student Employee of the Year

Dr. Silvia Hanna and Elizabeth Buckley at student award luncheon on April 10, 2018

Congratulations to Elizabeth Buckley, from the Academic Advising and Planning Center (AAPC) for being selected as the 2017-2018 Student Employee of the Year at the College of Charleston. She was selected from 1,246 student employees on campus. Her supervisor, Dr. Silvia Hanna, nominated Elizabeth for her contributions to AAPC’s new Mobile Academic Advising service.
