Tuesday 9/24—TIC: The Conversation Metaphor

  • Class Activities:
    • Assignment Sheets: Texts in ConversationResearch Progress Report
    • Library Workshop #1: We will leave class for the Library at around 9:00 or 1:15 depending on your section and spend the remainder of the class in the library.
  • Assignment Due:
    • RA Final Draft: upload to our Oaks drop box on Sunday 9/22.
  • Readings/ Viewings Due:
    • Re-visit Robin Marantz Henig’s: “What Is It about 20-Somethings?” paying attention to how she manages her research “conversation.”
    • Watch the CofC Library Tutorials and follow the link to OWL above the tutorials to review MLA Guidelines (these items are also accessible under “OWL” in the navigation bar).

Thursday 9/26—TIC: Fundamentals of Research

  • Class Activities (bring Henig, an RA source, and a copy of your favorite TIC source to class):

    • Style Workshop #4
      • From They Say / I Say: Chapter 6, “Skeptics May Object” (78-91)
      • From The Art of Styling Sentences, Sentence Patterns 9 & 10 (including variations)
      • Read tools 11, 13, 14, 16, 18.
  • Assignment Due:
    • Thursday before class: Comment in some detail on two of your peers’ Research Reflections posted last week (~100-150 words). The goal is not simply to give a thumbs up, but to ask probing questions to push your peers’ thinking to the next level.

WEEK 7_____________________________________

Tuesday 10/1

  • Class Activities:
    • Electronic HandoutTIC Strategies and Structure
    • Research Roundtable: students present Research Progress Reports in Class
    • Discuss Sample TIC
  • Readings Due:
    •  Read TIC Sample (available under “readings”) & fill out the grading grid included with the essay and be ready to discuss specific examples to back up your ratings.
    • Henig (yes, again): Identify the “conversational thesis” in Henig and try to describe three distinct strategies she uses to transition between paragraphs. For another source of your own choosing, focus on how the author manages the conversation by expertly framing quotes, and come to class with a few of your favorite examples to present and discuss with the discuss.

Thursday 10/3

  • Research Consultation Day
    • Meet in the lobby of Addlestone library. I will be at a table near the Information Center and will discuss Research Progress Reports with each of you. You will sign in at the start of class and sign out at the end.

WEEK 8____________________________________

Tuesday 10/8

  • Class Activities:
    • Group Workshop activity on Intro Paragraphs (emphasis on the conversational thesis)
    • Discuss TIC Sample 2 (available under readings)
  • Readings Due: 
    • TIC Sample 2 (also available under “Readings” tab).
  • Assignment Due:
    • In Class: Intro Section of your TIC including your conversational thesis (bring hard copy to class)
    • Fill out the grading grid for the second TIC sample and be ready to discuss in class.

Thursday 10/10—TIC Activity:

  • Class Activities:
    • Transition Activity: Orchestrating the Conversation
    • Schedule post-fall break TIC Conferences
  • Assignment Due: 
    • Wednesday by 8pm–Blog 4: summarize / discuss one of your sources (essentially a solid paragraph from your TIC dedicated to a single source)

Thursday 10/17–TIC Trouble-Shooting and Peer Review

  • Class Activities:
    • Common Problems and Fixes: TIC Trouble-Shooting Roundtable
    • Peer Review
  • Assignment Due:
    • Bring in two hard copies of your TIC Draft to class
  • Readings:
    • Note on readings: from this point forward, assigned reading will be greatly reduced as you work toward your RBA
