Hispanic Studies

Julie King and Jocelyn Moratzka, Spanish majors, and Eric Britton, Spanish minor have been awarded “Into the Fields Internships” with SAF (Student Action with Farmworkers) from June 3-August 11, 2013.

Dr. Benjamin Fraser’s book Understanding Juan Benet: New Perspectives has been published by the University of South Carolina Press (2013).

Professor Carl Wise’s study “Playing the Crowd: Interpretive History and Audience Participation in Lope de Vega’s La inocente sangre,” has been accepted for publication in Hispanófila.

Professor Benjamin Fraser has been named an Associate Editor of Hispania, the refereed journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Stephanie Ferrell, Spanish major (May 2013), has been accepted to New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development to pursue her M.A. in Speech Language Pathology in Communicative Disorders.

Dr. Michael Gómez’s  article “Freedom & the Soul within the Mechano-Materialist System: The Bergsonian Presence in Pardo Bazán’s Naturalistic Fictions” has been accepted for publication in the Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

The College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, are proud to announce their 9th annual South Carolina Spanish Teacher of the Year Award for 2013. The three finalists will be recognized and the awardee announced during a ceremony on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 7:00pm in Arnold Hall of the Jewish Studies Center at the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.  The S.C. Hispanic Leadership Council and the Francis Marion Hotel in downtown Charleston will co-sponsor this event.  Dr. Mark P. On Sunday, February 24, 2013, Dr. Mark Del Mastro, Chair of Hispanic Studies, joined residents of the Spanish House/”Casa Hispana” to prepare a dinner of Cuban-style rice, a Spanish dish.
