The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Charleston School of the Arts will showcase “Legacy,” directed by Kristin Alexander and choreographed by the College’s dance faculty, guest artist Harambee Dance Company, and student Emmaline Sheahan. The College’s dance students comprise the cast.
With the College of Charleston’s 250th year commencing in a few months, the theme of legacy acknowledges the past and present of our lives, community, and world. “Legacy” is a collection of dance works questioning where we come from and how will we make an impact. The concert will include pieces closely connected to our community including an excerpt of “Coming to Monuments” by Erin Leigh (faculty and director of Dance Matters) and Robert Ivey’s “Tarantella,” which is being restaged by Olga Wise.
The concert guest artist, Harambee Dance Company, spent the last weekend in September setting an excerpt of company repertory entitled “Going Home.” The company is directed by Frank Malloy III (Class of ‘88), his wife Sandella (choreographer), and their son Frank IV (music director). The company’s connection to Charleston, blend of the traditional and contemporary to create a new style of African Dance, and storytelling make “Going Home” a wonderful addition to the concert. Kristin Alexander hopes, “Harambee’s piece will promote dialog about some of the historical and social issues in Charleston. The students have embraced the choreography and deepened their connection to the movement under the direction of the Malloy family. I am so grateful that Frank III and Frank IV will be playing live for the concert, inviting the audience to find their own connection to the work through the music and dance.”
The performance will run from Nov. 22-24, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. (Sunday at 2:00 p.m. only) in the Emmett Robinson Theatre, Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. Tickets are $20 for public admission; $15 under 18 & over 60; $12 College of Charleston students and employees.Season subscriptions are still available.
