The College of Charleston Opera Program in the School of the Arts will present two, comedic performances. The one-act operas, “A Game of Chance” and “Gallantry,” combine outlandish antics with the musical integrity of American composers Seymour Barab and Douglas Moore, respectively.

Performances will take place from Saturday, Feb. 25 through Monday, Feb. 27 in the Recital Hall of the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. The Saturday and Monday performances will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday’s curtain time will be at 3 p.m. only. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students age 22 and under with a valid ID. Reservations can be made by calling the Department of Music at 843-953-5927.

The plot of “A Game of Chance,” addresses the age-old saying, “Be careful what you wish for.” Each of three women is unhappy with her “boring” life: One would like to be wealthy; one would like to be famous; and one would like to have a lover in her life. The women have their dreams fulfilled only to find that they lack happiness and even feel tormented by their outcomes. Written in 1956, Seymour Barab’s comic genius shines in this light-hearted and musically diverse opera. The text, by Evelyn Manacher Draper, is based on the play “All on a Summer’s Day” by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements.

In 1958 Douglas Moore, famous for his opera “The Ballad of Baby Doe,” wrote the one-act, satirical opera “Gallantry” in homage to the soap opera. It is, in essence, a “soap opera” opera – complete with the surgeon who is in love with the nurse who is engaged to the patient for whom the surgeon is to perform an emergency appendectomy! The opera includes bath soap and floor wax commercials in between scenes, staying true to early-TV’s live, in-studio commercials.

The production will feature many of the award-winning singers from the College and is directed and produced by David Templeton and Anna Steenerson. Dr. Robert Taylor will conduct the professional orchestra for the productions.
