Senate

“Welcome to the Student Government Association’s Student Senate!

The Student Government Association’s main legislative branch consists of the Senate, a body of forty-eight student Senators from the College of Charleston. Ultimately, the duties and initiatives carried out by the Senators come before the Senate in the form of bills and resolutions, and it is through the passage of such legislation that the Student Government Association is able to act and present a unified stance.

I encourage you to attend the Student Government Association’s Senate meetings, which are held every Tuesday at 4:30pm in the Stern Center Ballroom. All Senate hearings are public and pertain directly to the College of Charleston campus and community. “

- Vice President Isaiah Nelson

The Senate holds ten voting positions for every class at the College as well as two alternate seats per class to vote if a voting member is not present. The SGA Vice President presides over the Senate and operates under Robert’s Rules of Order. The purpose of the Senate is to propose and debate bills and resolutions pertaining to Student Life at the College of Charleston. It is the job of the Senate to allocate funds to over 155 student organizations, provide educational events, and be a mediator between the administration and the students of the College. The Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 4:30 in the Stern Center Ballroom, 4th floor Stern Center.

The Senate is further split into seven committees that are defined by the SGA’s bylaws. Those include, Academic Affairs, Allocations, Campus Diversity, Community Outreach, Public Relations, Student Organizational Review Board (SOR), and Student Involvement. Every Senator is required to sit on one of the committees.

All committees are also open to the student body, based on the approval of the Executive Committee. Each participating student must be in good standing with the College of Charleston, as defined by the Compass.

There are also two ad-hoc committees that have been formed by the Senate through passage of a bill, those are the Bylaws Committee and the New Facilities Informational Committee. To learn more about these committees please click on the links below.
