CHARLESTON, South Carolina— November 17, 2011— The College of Charleston Student Government Association announced today the appointment of Matthew Vaveris as the executive vice president of the student body. Vaveris, a senior at the College from Potomac, Maryland, will work directly under the newly inaugurated Student Body President Elliott Wright.

Vaveris has been an active member of the Student Government Association since 2010, serving previously as Parliamentarian on the executive board and as a student senator. Most recently, Vaveris helped to maintain the organization’s order and direction. This included upholding structure in Tuesday Senate and Thursday executive board meetings, as well as determining the appropriate and proper courses of action per specific situations.

“Matt easily rose to the top of the applicant pool for the position,” said Wright. “His even temperament and familiarity with both Parliamentary Procedure the inner workings of the student senate make him highly qualified for the position. I have confidence in his ability to lead and look forward working with him throughout the remainder of the school year.”

Vaveris, who has previously held a congressional internship with the U.S. House of Representatives, is also incredibly involved on campus. As an active brother of both Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and co-educational honors fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi, Vaveris is also a member of the South Carolina Student Legislature and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

The Student Government Association was founded in 1922. The purpose of the Senate is to propose and debate bills and resolutions pertaining to Student Life at the College. It is the job of the Senate to allocate funds to over 160 student organizations, provide educational events, and be a mediator between the administration and the students of the College. The Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Stern Center Ballroom, 4th floor Stern Center. It is currently working on a series of initiatives, which include increasing student involvement on campus, legalizing skateboarding as a mode for transportation, creating a safer environment for bikers, and constructing a more diverse and engaged community on campus.
