We Are Limitless: A Conversation

Charleston, South Carolina, October 10, 2011 — The College of Charleston Student Government Association is thrilled to announce the debut of a new conversation amongst the student body, titled “We Are Limitless.” The purpose of the new conversation is to initiate change within issues that affect the college’s students in their daily lives.

We Are Limitless is meant to foster engagement and interaction between the students, their elected representatives, and the city of Charleston. The first initiative the student body has chosen to take on is one that affects students and citizens alike: the legality of skateboarding as a mode of transportation. Junior Erich Hellstrom, spear header of the initiative, said the overall goal is “to support College of Charleston students in hopefully changing the law to allow skateboarding as a mode of transportation and also to promote biker safety downtown through developing biker-friendly routes.”

Current city laws allow skateboarding in certain areas and at specific times, which does not include the people who use skateboarding as a mode of transportation; this initiative calls for city government officials to change policies to be all encompassing.

It will demand support from all potential sources of help and relies on the efforts of every active, passionate, and open-minded individual.

We echo the demands of those who prefer healthy, economical, and efficient modes of transportation, under the daily threat of meeting the same fate as their many peers and classmates who have already been ticketed and received summonses, which are citations to appear in court.

We will pursue these goals by working with city government and supporting those students who chose to attend the city counsel meeting on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in order to voice their opinions on the current laws.

We Are Limitless is combining “digital activism” through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs, with “pavement activism” at rallies, protests and events, to create a network of supportive individuals and organizations in the pursuit of its goals.
