Your third to last paragraph is full of some very important observations, Shaina. I certainly hope that this class has contributed to your sense of agency in terms of your education, among other things–even as I’m pretty sure it’s also contributed to your frustration, and perhaps even anger, through the very kinds of observations it encourages (as you note in this paragraph). Keep asking those questions.

I’m glad to hear all of this, Blake. Prior to having 299 in the curriculum, such observations were encouraged only sporadically and sometimes, I suspect, never at all, throughout a given individual’s experience of the English major. It sounds like you’re in an excellent position for continuing on with your 300 level classes.

You’re not the first, Elizabeth, to realize via taking 299 that an English major isn’t what you’re after. That’s really one of the benefits of having the course, so that people don’t get too invested in the major before realizing this.

You point to some very apparent constraints at this time of the semester, that it’s pretty difficult to see as enabling rather than limiting, so it’s an ideal example for what we’ve been talking about of late.

Being allowed to be wrong is vital to learning, so I’m glad to see you noting and appreciating it, Blake. It’s not easy to let yourself be wrong, particularly in public. So I appreciate your own investment in that. As to the assignments, thanks for the feedback. This course, like any, is always a work in progress. Revise, revise.

Nice anecdotal image to star this, Casandra–and beyond that, you point to the ways “natural” and “nature” are incredibly slippery, and thus very powerful in what they offer those who’d like to make claims without really supporting them.

The anecdote you share does often seem to be the case, Alexis. It’s sometimes reassuring, on an individual level, while on a social level it’s a bit scary, in that this apparent truth could be used in any number of ways to compel people unethically. I wonder if you might have thoughts on that possibility?
