New Student Checklist

Preparing a computer for use at the College is fairly straightforward, but take a look at this checklist to make sure you don’t miss a step.

If you’re buying a new computer, consider our recommended laptops and have a look at our buyer’s guide. Alternately, you can bring an older computer and use the first semester to assess your computing needs.

We strongly recommend that all students purchase a copy of Microsoft Office. Discounted pricing is available at the Microsoft Student Store.

Most locations at the College are wireless, so you aren’t required to have an ethernet cable to connect to the Internet. Wired connections are still available in many buildings, however, and can serve as a useful backup.  If you don’t already have one, Monoprice often has the lowest prices.

Whether it’s the College-provided Symantec Endpoint Protection or an alternative, all students running Windows should use some form of antivirus software. See our antivirus page for more information.

Students primarily use two wireless networks on campus: MyResnet and cofc-secure.  MyResnet broadcasts in the residence halls, while cofc-secure broadcasts throughout the rest of the campus.

MyResnet is supported by Apogee.  If you have difficulty connecting, you can reach their support line at 855.290.7138.

To connect to cofc-secure, try our wireless setup tool.  If that doesn’t work, check our easy instructions to connect manually or visit Student Computing in the Addlestone Library.

To deter theft and help locate your laptop in the event that it is lost or stolen, register your electronics with Public Safety.
