Aging and the Family

Socy 335 Aging and the Family

With increasing life expectancy and the enormous growth in the 65+ population, family as a social institution has experienced unprecedented change. This course examines how the graying of the population has brought about fundamental changes in family relationships and structure. Topics covered include: the family/systemic context of growing older, legal and economic issues, emotional challenges of later adulthood, issues surrounding caregiving, and the manner in which roles, rules and symbols affect multi-generational families.
