Applications are invited from the tenured faculty of the College of Charleston for the position of Associate Provost for Curriculum and Academic Administration. This is a 12-month, academic administrative appointment with a start date is no later than August 1 and preferably July 1, 2019. Please send a CV and letter of interest to Dr. Fran Welch (welchf@cofc.edu) and copy to Michelle McGrew (mmcgrew@cofc.edu).  Applications will be considered by a committee who will conduct interviews of top candidates and make a recommendation to the Interim Provost.

The Associate Provost is primarily responsible for providing leadership and support in the area of curriculum development and review, assessment, and academic policy. Working directly with faculty and program leaders to conceptualize curricular proposals, conducting regular reviews of curriculum submitted in Curriculog, providing assistance to the undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the Graduate Education Committee, and assuring responses to budgetary requests embedded in curricular proposals constitute a substantial portion of the position. In partnership with the Registrar, the Associate Provost also enforces academic regulations and policy and manages petitions for exception to policy, including curricular exception management.  In partnership with the Registrar and the leadership of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, the Associate Provost ensures that use of our academic learning management system is consistent with our academic policies and best practices for academic record-keeping.  Under the support of the Provost, the Associate Provost will also coordinate the development of online education offerings and will coordinate and facilitate the incorporation of diversity into our curriculum. In the area of assessment, the Associate Provost will work with the Provost to review academic program assessment plans and facilitate compliance with institutional policies, accreditation agency guidelines, state laws and policies, and federal regulations.

The Associate Provost will work closely with deans, faculty, and relevant committees to identify issues that can be resolved by adopting new academic policy or by revising existing policies and will typically lead the effort to enact appropriate solutions.  On behalf of the Provost, the Associate Provost ensures compliance with attendance verification, midterm and final grade submission, and other critical institutional processes. Associate Provost duties associated with academic policy and administration also include the academic calendar, academic catalogs, dual enrollment, and assistance with commencement functions. The Associate Provost reviews, responds to, and makes recommendations to the Provost regarding student issues and complaints and also serves as the Provost’s designee on multiple College and Senate committees and as the primary liaison to the Commission on Higher Education (CHE).

Applicants must hold a tenured faculty appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the College of Charleston. Previous experience with curricular development and management is strongly preferred, whether as an Associate Dean, Department Chair, Associate Chair, Program Director, or member of a College committee with responsibilities for curricular review. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in working with varied groups as both a facilitator and a leader. The ability to work at both the conceptual and detailed level, to respond quickly to situations as they arise, and to be self-directed are important. A willingness to manage multiple sensitive, high-priority, and stressful tasks is essential to the success of the Associate Provost, as are strong writing skills and a willingness to work closely and collaboratively with the myriad constituents of the Office of the Provost.

This position requires some travel for professional development and for the management of our regulatory and accreditation compliance. Occasional travel to meetings of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education is necessary.

Please send a CV and letter of interest to Interim Provost Fran Welch (welchf@cofc.edu) by June 21, 2019.  Applications will be considered by a committee who will conduct interviews of top candidates and make a recommendation to the Provost.  The start date for this position is negotiable, but service in the position is expected to begin no later than August 1, 2019, and preferably by July 1.
