Heroes Exhibit at the Walters Museum

November 1st, 2009 · No Comments

As a follow up to my post this summer about the Walters Museum in Baltimore, I wanted to point out that the museum has a special exhibit going on now through January 3, 2010 on heroes in the Greek world.

As always with the Walters, an outstanding website accompanies the exhibit,  with images of items included in the special show and other information.  I doubt I’m going to make it up to Baltimore a second time this year, but if you’re nearby, I encourage you to visit the Walters.

I found a great short article in USA Today talking about new studies involving Pompeii.  There is so much interesting work going on at the site — and artifacts are on exhibit at museums around the world.

Triumph of Dionysus sarcophagus – c. A.D. 190

A few weeks ago I took a trip up north and visited the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.  Over the years I had often come across discussions of pieces in the Walters collection, and had long wanted to visit.  It is terrific — one of the finest museums I have visited in the U.S.  They have a comprehensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, including sculpture, painting, jewelry, metalwork, coins and more.  The website for the museum is also excellent — you can view images of the items in the collection and read brief descriptions.  Well worth checking out – and certainly worth a visit if you are near Baltimore or passing through (there is no substitute for seeing things in person!!)

New Acropolis Museum opens in Athens

June 21st, 2009 · No Comments

At last, the new museum in Athens for artifacts from the acropolis has opened.  They even planned space for the “Parthenon Marbles” (a.k.a. the “Elgin Marbles”), should they move from London to Athens.
