Productions of the Department of Theatre and Dance
The College of Charleston Department of Theatre and Dance consists of over twenty faculty members who teach a range of courses in the arts of Theatre and Dance and also create a series of public performances for the Charleston community. Our Department is one of a select number in the U.S. accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Each academic year there are typically four to five plays presented by the Department in the Emmett Robinson Theatre. The Emmett Robinson Theatre, named after a man who both studied and taught at the College and who was instrumental in bringing the Theatre Arts into being on this campus, was built in 1979, seats approximately 310 people, and has been an accommodating venue for plays of widely varied requirements. Over the years this stage has been the platform on which daring, provocative, intelligent plays have served to enhance the profile of this Department both regionally and beyond.
Welcome and Thank You for Your Interest in “On the Bum”
On the Bum, and its companion pieces presented in the Emmett Robinson Theatre during the 2012-2013 academic year, were chosen by Departmental faculty members during the previous year. Production teams, including a director, designers, and others begin meeting and devising their interpretive plans for each play months before the casts are even chosen. After actors are selected for roles, there begins a rehearsal period of four to five weeks to ready the play for its audiences. This production of On The Bum is being directed by Professor Mark Landis and the Scene, Costume, and Lighting designs are all being created by a team of talented Theatre students. Corey Smiley has designed the scenery, Alanda Parker and Katie Rhoden have designed the costumes, and Brenna McNamara has designed the lighting. Over sixty Theatre students, faculty, and staff members will have contributed their efforts to the production by the time it opens on February 21 of 2013.
