Gibbes / St. John’s Program

It Starts with a Dot, literary journal (2017-18) St. John’s High School

About

This arts education program is a yearlong collaboration among the Gibbes Museum of Art, graduate MFA students at the College of Charleston, and high school students at St. John’s High School (Johns Island, SC). Through grants awarded from the National Endowment for the Arts and gifted by Arts, etc., two MFA graduate students teach creative writing to grades 9-12 one day a week, for 18 weeks during the school year, bringing in lessons on image and metaphor, on ekphrastic and self-portrait poetry and beyond. Students take a field trip to the Gibbes, and they learn how to write about their own experiences through the intersecting disciplines of art, history, science, and music. The MFA graduate mentors help select material for a literary journal (generously printed by Arcadia Publishing) which features the poetry and artwork by the St. John’s students.
