The Citadel has graduate assistantships working in various units of the university for graduate students enrolled through the Citadel and who are carrying at least six hours of coursework. Applications for such assistantships are available on-line through their Human Resource Department’s website.
The College of Charleston Department of English awards a limited number of graduate assistantships to current and incoming M.A. students enrolled through the University of Charleston. The graduate school also has information on assistantships. The College of Charleston Career Center may also be of assistance, and enrolled students can search CougarJobLink for assistantships on the Student Services tab of MyCharleston.
College of Charleston English department assistantships are competitive awards based on factors such as student GRE scores, undergraduate GPA, and letters of recommendation.
Graduate Assistantships are year-long positions that require students to work either 20 hours per week (at an annual stipend of $12,400) or ten hours per week (at an annual stipend of $6,200). Graduate Assistants must also be enrolled full-time in the program (6-9 hours per semester). Our English Department Graduate Assistants usually work in one of the following capacities:
- As a research assistant to an individual professor
- As a teaching assistant in a lower-level composition or literature course
- As an editorial assistant on one of our department publications
- As an assistant for a program
Applications for GA positions are solicited for the upcoming year at the end of the spring semester of the prior year. Ordinarily, incoming students interested in applying for one of these positions should submit their application materials by April 1 in order to be considered. Incoming students receiving GAs, provided that they are making good progress toward the degree and their supervisor(s) can offer a good recommendation, may apply for a GA in their second year. Students not selected as GAs their first year are welcome to apply for the position for their second year in the program.
