Spring ’19: ENGL 517 – Star Struck: Movie Stars, Celebrities, and Meaning

Professor Colleen Glenn. Elective. Meets at the College of Charleston, Wednesday, 6-8:45 p.m.
Special Topic in Literature

In this course, we will examine the social phenomenon of the movie star and how stars bring added meaning to film. We will study various film stars as constructed personas, images that have been formed through myriad onscreen and offscreen performances, publicity narratives, and audience responses. This course will not be an exercise in fandom, but rather an in-depth and careful exploration of what stars signify, how they are products of their historical moment, and how we—as consumers of stars—play a crucial role in the star/celebrity machine. Coursework will include weekly film screenings outside of class time.
