Focusing on Your Writing: The ePortfolio

The joint MA program in English has just introduced an MA ePortfolio requirement for students who choose not to complete the thesis option. Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic calendar, for these students the ePortfolio replaces a comprehensive examination as a measure of knowledge and skills gained during the program and culminating experience.

In their final semester, students work with their home institution’s program director to select three substantial pieces of their own writing completed during the program. Advised by the program director, the student will revise these pieces to highlight how they demonstrate program goals and outcomes for student research and writing. The three revised exhibits will be bookended by reflective pieces that introduce the writer, the collection of exhibits, discuss the selection process, and the writer’s development as such in the in the program. All ePortfolios will be reviewed by the Joint MA Committee.

The ePortfolio will serve as the student’s own record of learning and accomplishment in an MA program that aspires to be student-centered and invested in the individual development of each student.
