And So It Ends: A Reflection on What I I Have Gained from This Class (Including a Fancy Way to Write Titles!)

Books_for_Wanderers_FeaturedPrior to taking this class, I was ambivalent at best towards it. It was just another hurdle to jump before I could get into more interesting courses. However, after completing this course, I have to say that it was incredibly useful, if nothing else. I have learned much more successful ways to craft essays, organize my thoughts, and analyze literature. Even though this class at one point caused me to doubt whether I even wanted to be an English major, it also helped me figure out that I did in fact want to study literature. I feel much more prepared for my future courses in this field, and have gained new ways of looking at English that I can explore in further studies. In particular, I think that this class will help with my essay writing, as the intensive drafting and revision process has really made me reflect on my writing procedure, style, and tendency to just write my thoughts out and call it finished. After this class, I have a more mature view on essays in general, and I now will be able to utilize a wider range of tools to effectively communicate my thoughts.

In addition, I have found that English is a much more diverse field than I realized. Beyond traditional fare like novels and poems, English looks at how we communicate, and applies to a wide range of media, from video games to fan fiction. My final project focused on fan fiction, and, in it, I found something that I might want to pursue. Particularly interesting to me is how original texts are adapted into new creations, be it from a book to a fan fiction, a myth to a movie, or even from one production of a play to another. This idea is something that holds promise for me, and I may even be able to craft my Bachelor’s Essay around the topic. This class has helped me see a future for myself in English studies.
