College of Charleston R.E.A.C.H. Program (formerly called LIFE*)

The R.E.A.C.H. (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) program at the College of Charleston is a four-year inclusive program for students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.  The purpose of the program is to provide the opportunity for all students to realize their intellectual and personal potential, and to become responsible, productive members of society.  REACH students will participate in the academic, residential, social, and cultural experiences offered by the College, with appropriate support for success.  The program will commence in the beginning of Fall Semester 2010.

The REACH program offers an opportunity for the College to extend its mission of providing extensive credit and non-credit programs to students whose quality of life and opportunities to contribute to society hinge on access to educational opportunities in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The College of Charleston is eager to fill a much-needed void by meeting the growing educational demands of this group of individuals, and at the same time increase diversity on a campus that is rooted in the liberal arts philosophy of embracing diversity and forward-thinking for a better society.

REACH Program planning and development is supported by a grant from College Transition Connection written by Dr. Cindi May in the Psychology Department with Dr. Fran Welch, Dean of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance as co-author.

If you are a traditional CofC student and would like to apply to live in the REACH house for 2010-2011, please complete an application and turn it in to Edie Cusack or Dr. Bruce Fleming.  Applications for the REACH program, both for the program and for housing, are now available on the Admissions page.

*Note that the name of the program was changed from LIFE to REACH in order to avoid confusion with the SC LIFE Scholarship Program.
