On September 12, 2012, Professor Benjamin Fraser delivered an invited lecture at the University of Kentucky entitled ”Toward an Urban Cultural Studies: Henri Lefebvre, Space and the Culture(s) of Cities”.

For the 8th consecutive year, the College of Charleston’s Department of Hispanic Studies is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15) with various activities. The Spanish Club will host tertulias, informal gatherings to practice conversational Spanish on September 28 and October 19 from 4:30-6:00pm at Yo Burrito restaurant on 77 Wentworth Street; Tango Night on October 2; Movie Night on October 11. Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, will host its inaugural Sigma Delta Pi Lecture Series on September 26 at 4:00pm in RSS 235 featuring Dr. Hilary Barnes of Hispanic Studies; a poetry recital in Spanish in October; participation in the Latin American Festival on October 7 from 12-6:00pm at Wannamaker County Park. The Hispanic Latino Club will hold a bake sale on September 18 from 9am-2pm on Cougar Mall to fund its “Rock the Vote Campaign” on September 21.
“Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month at the College of Charleston allows us to sensitize students and the community about the culture, language and history of the United States’ largest minority group,” said Dr. Mark P. Del Mastro, Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies. “As Mexico is the only country that has a larger population of Hispanics than the U.S., celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month reacquaints all of us with this ever-growing and critically important sector of U.S. society.”
