By Monica Lavin
Posted on 18 August 2015 | 3:05 pm

Please be aware that the College of Charleston’s Junos Pulse VPN environment does not currently support Windows 10. If you connect to VPN using the Junos Pulse client, please do not upgrade to Windows 10. Network Security is currently upgrading and testing the client to allow for Windows 10 support. We hope to be able to provide Junos Pulse VPN support for Windows 10 by mid to late September. For more information about the overall Windows 10 support at the College of Charleston, please visit

IT Outage Notification

By Hannah Swanson
Posted on 15 June 2015 | 10:59 am

Please report to the Helpdesk any/all occurrences of your voicemail light not working following the Wednesday, June 10 evening reset of the voicemail system.

Until we are able to confirm that Spirit has made successful repairs and notify you to that effect, you should occasionally check for voicemail messages even though your voicemail waiting light is not on.

The voicemail message waiting lights on the system that services the College, The Citadel, and other local state agencies continue to experience sporadic outages. The Wednesday evening maintenance effort of the state’s telephone and voicemail provider, Spirit Communications, was not completely successful. IT is monitoring the situation and will keep you informed.

OS X Bash Update 1.0

By Monica Lavin
Posted on 6 October 2014 | 2:04 pm

Apple has released a software update for the OS X, the operating system that runs on the Mac, to fix a bash vulnerability.

“The vast majority of OS X users are not at risk to recently reported bash vulnerabilities,” an Apple spokesperson told iMore. “Bash, a UNIX command shell and language included in OS X, has a weakness that could allow unauthorized users to remotely gain control of vulnerable systems. With OS X, systems are safe by default and not exposed to remote exploits of bash unless users configure advanced UNIX services.”

The exploit reportedly affects most Linux- and Unix-based operating systems, including OS X. For more information, please visit

OAKS and Chrome Compatibility Issues

By Monica Lavin
Posted on 26 February 2014 | 1:51 pm

There is a known compatibility issue with OAKS and Google Chrome versions 32 and 33 (beta).  With Google Chrome versions 32 and 33 (beta), pop-up windows are not working properly within OAKS.  These pop-up windows are used frequently throughout the system.  The common behavior is that a window will display “Loading….”, but then times out to a blank window.  If you experience these issues, we recommend that you try another web browser such as Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer.  Desire2Learn is looking into the issue, however, they do not currently have a time frame for a resolution.

Attention Holiday Shoppers

By Monica Lavin
Posted on 6 December 2013 | 12:31 pm

Since the holiday season is upon us, Information Technology (IT) would like to remind shoppers that not all consumer devices function well, or at all, on an enterprise network such as CofC. We hope that this information will help minimize any instances where devices are purchased but are not compatible with the CofC enterprise network. Android and iOS phones and tablets are supported and work properly on the College network.

Specific devices that IT knows will NOT function as they do at home, or at all, on the College wired and wireless networks are:

  • Apple TV, Chromecast, and ROKU streaming media devices
  • Base level Kindle readers
  • Wireless printers (client mode)
  • Wireless backup and network storage devices (client mode)

The items listed below are NOT permitted on the College network. (These devices actually have the ability to degrade network performance and cause instability and/or interference in the wireless and wired networks.)

  • Wireless Routers
  • Network Routers
  • Network Switches
  • Network Hubs
  • Wireless Printers (Ad hoc mode)
  • Wireless Projectors (Ad hoc mode)
  • Wireless backup and network storage devices (Ad hoc mode)

If you have questions about specific devices contact the Helpdesk at for more information.

Known VPN Issue with OS X Mavericks

By Monica Lavin
Posted on 29 October 2013 | 9:11 am

If you use the College’s VPN system on an Apple device, please do not update your desktop operating system to Mavericks as it may cause issues when accessing the VPN system. The VPN system at the College is purchased from a vendor. The vendor informed IT that they are testing various ways to work around the issues and will update IT once they have identified a solution.  As a result, VPN support for OS X Mavericks is not currently supported on the College VPN system.
