OVERVIEW: On Thursday, August 13th, 2015, at 10:00 PM through 11:00 PM, Network Engineering will perform software upgrades to equipment that connects Harbor Walk, North Campus, Grice, Patriots Point, Dixie Plantation, and Central Stores to the main campus. Wired and wireless network and Internet connectivity will be unavailable during this maintenance window.

New MyCharleston Password Recovery Functionality

*At this time, Information Technology will postpone the MyCharleston Password Recovery Implementation that was originally scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday August 19th, until after the start of classes. We will keep the campus informed of the new implementation date.

We are excited to announce an upcoming improvement to your MyCharleston password recovery experience. We are implementing a functionality that will allow you to manually recover your Cougars password by answering a series of questions. You will no longer need to contact Helpdesk to recover or reset your Cougars password. This new functionality also improves the security of the password recovery process.

When Information Technology implements this new functionality, you will be asked to complete your recovery profile when you first log into MyCharleston. You’ll be asked to answer a series of eight questions.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • You will only have to set up your recovery profile once.
  • If you forget your password, you’ll be prompted to answer two of the eight questions to recover your password manually.
  • The login process will not change.
  • All eight questions must be answered.
  • No duplicate answers will be accepted.

Campus Wireless Network Maintenance

Wireless connectivity at all campus locations, including remote sites, will be intermittent during this maintenance window.

Windows 10

Windows 10 was released by Microsoft and the College of Charleston (CofC) Information Technology division (IT) is just as excited as the news media about this newest operating system. However, we have been testing early releases of Windows 10 for several months now and we already know that there are compatibility challenges for Windows 10 with several major CofC applications. For individual’s personal computers and tablets Windows 10 looks to be a significant improvement over Windows 8, but at an enterprise level Windows 10 and its built-in Internet Explorer 11 are far from turn-key.

Over the next several months, Information Technology will continue testing the compatibility of the current release Windows 10 with our campus applications and systems. Due to the large variety of web browsers and College applications/systems and the expected release of early patches to Windows 10, this will be a lengthy process to ensure your productivity is not negatively impacted. We’re are working to develop an overall support model for College-owned Windows 10 desktops, laptops and tablets, on and off campus, in classrooms and labs, and in faculty and staff offices.

For the time being, IT will continue to support and standardize on Windows computers running Windows 7. At this time, IT has no plans to adopt Windows 10 in the immediate future. Microsoft will continue their support for Windows 7 until 2020, so we have time to get this right and conduct a smooth rollout of Windows 10 across campus.
