Ciao —

Day 14 is here, and lest we forget at this halfway point why we’re on our Italian excursion, I’m posting some pictures regarding our classroom facility. That’s because this am where we learn.

Photo 1 is of the Palazzo Anacaiani, built around 1650, taken from the Piazza della Liberta. Our room is on the third floor, the two windows at the upper left, and is graciously loaned to us each year by the Comune di Spoleto.

Photo 2 is taken from inside the classroom, that farthest left window, looking down on the piazza and a dribbling of students emerging from the main corso of town, a sharp uphill climb of about a half mile from Piazza Garibaldi (the total walk from the villa to class is 1.3 miles, downhill and then up).

And photo 3 is of perhaps my favorite and endearingly awesome view, that from the bathroom up there on the third floor. This is the Roman amphitheater in town, undiscovered until the 19th century. The incredible find had been buried beneath the Ancaiani family stables until some enterprising archaeologists thought to start poking around, and is used as a venue for the Festival dei Due Mondi every year. I can only imagine what a wonderful box seat this perch would make.
