Recently The Post and Courier newspaper featured an article and photographs focused on the Women’s and Gender Studies program at the College of Charleston. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences program currently houses a minor, but in the fall semester the program will welcome a major in women’s and gender studies.

A few highlights of the article:
-History professor Sandra Slater said: “Studying gender roles and sexuality is important on a campus where 12 percent of students identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.”
-“Micah Carpenter, a senior, wanted more than to dabble in women’s and gender studies. She could graduate in May with a major in religious studies and a minor in psychology. But she’s going to attend college another semester and hold off her graduation until December so she can also earn a degree in women’s and gender studies.”
-According to Cara Delay, History professor and interim director of the Women’s and Gender Studies program: “Courses are offered that appeal to women with many different backgrounds and value systems. For instance … in addition to History of American Sexualities, which has created “a buzz” on campus, the program offers a course on conservative voices in women’s and gender studies.”
-Alison Piepmeier, director of WGS said: “People who major or teach in women’s and gender studies programs are often the kind of people who want to change the world … But they do that through academics and research.”
