Less is More

6/9/14- Thankfully, today was the last day of mortar samples! We finally asked for that ladder and finished out the mortar samples that were not within reach. We finished out our last field day early and made the trip out to the town of Lismore.

In the town of Lismore is Lismore Castle, which is the property of the Duke of Devonshire. The castle is not open to the public, however the garden is open to the public along with a small art gallery. The upper level gardens are part parterre gardens and part working garden with fruit, berry and vegetable plants.

Inside Lismore Castle Arts the current installation was just a little too contemporary for our tastes. After seeing what could only be called a bicycle seat in the sky, we started to admire the structure more so than the art pieces. From the art gallery you can move down to the lower gardens that surround the outer walls of the castle. This garden had larger trees and sculptures with trees organized in beautiful alleys.

From Lismore Castle we visited St. Carthage Cathedral. The Cathedral is a beautiful Church of Ireland with many preservation issues, which are in poor management but it had a beautiful wood privacy screen that many churches we visited not longer had.

After our visit to the cathedral we moseyed back to Youghal for the night!
