Three Weeks in Greece with the Sea Turtles? Yes Please!

The Center for Civic Engagement is offering a 2024 Maymester Alternative Break trip to Greece focused on wildlife rehabilitation and sustainable Tourism.

Alternative Break? An immersive educational travel experience that connects students with thought leaders and community organizations who are serving their communities in forward-thinking ways.

The Maymester Trip: Travel to Zakynthos, Greece from May 14 – June 4, 2024, and support sea turtle conservation efforts on the island. During the trip participants take part in strong direct service, educational programing, daily reflection, and leadership development.

Let your Voice be Heard on Proposed King Street Safety Renovations

The Student Sustainability Collaborative is seeking your input on a proposed King St. renovation project.

The Background: Charleston City Council is currently considering proposals to renovate lower King St. and make the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Why it Matters: The feedback poll is very brief but will help ensure that student input is heard on a topic that directly impacts the safety and well-being of our community.

The Poll is open to all members of the CofC community.

 

Applications for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship Are Now Open!

Applications for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship, which provides funding for students interested in oceanic and atmospheric sciences, are now open!

Details: The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.

Great Fit For: Sophomores studying biological, life, and agricultural sciences; physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; social and behavioral science; or teacher education.

The Booz Allen University Recruiting team is kicking off the hiring process for the 2024 Summer Games cohort! Booz Allen will host 132 Summer Games interns from June 5 until August 15 for a 10-week paid internship.

The Opportunity: The Summer Games is an intensive, 10-week paid internship program that simulates a real-world startup accelerator. Your mission? Develop breakthrough ideas and solutions for our clients’ most pressing problems. The Booz Allen Summer Games brings together aspiring engineers, data scientists, designers, and change makers to create powerful solutions for real-world client problems.

Enter the Civil Discourse Essay Contest for $1,000!

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is inviting current CofC students to participate in the Fall 2023 Civil Discourse Essay Contest!

The Contest: Write a 750-word essay responding to the prompt, “What does healthy public conflict look and sound like in a democracy?” Essays will be judged by the coherence of the argument, the quality of examples and evidence used, and the vividness of the writing. All essays will be checked by AI detection software.

The Prize: Sponsored by a generous gift from the Rusovich family, the student who writes the winning essay will receive $1,000.

On the Front Lines of Drug Discovery: A Laboratory Internship in Drug Resistance and Drug Development

The Ozgur Sahin Lab at MUSC is looking for students to join the fight against breast cancer by contributing to cancer biology research at the intersection of drug resistance, metastasis, and drug discovery.

The Opportunity: Students will gain hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment in cell culture and molecular biology techniques, while working with cutting-edge patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and transgenic mice models.
