Honors Engaged uses four thematic umbrellas to administer our students’ connections to their new community: Learning, Growing, Sustaining, and Changing. The program further provides students the opportunity to engage in the Charleston community in two distinct ways:
All students are initially placed in a Deliberative Democracy track focused on engaging a critical issue in the Charleston community. Students participate in approved campus and community discussions, committees, and other deliberative events. Students in each project track meet as a group every other week with track liaisons and/or Honors faculty and staff to research opportunities, plan group attendance, and report back on previous opportunities.
A significant number of our students ultimately join a Direct Service track and commit to an engagement with a single community-based-organization partnered with the Honors College. Students attend the project weekly and contribute directly toward achieving the project’s goal through hands-on work.
