VK: When was the Watersports Club founded?

AL: We were founded in 2008 by Dale Slear and Cameron Ballinger.

VK: What is the club’s primary mission, and how do you uphold it through your activities?

AL: The primary mission of this club is to have fun and progress on the water. We provide you with the opportunity to learn new watersports–or become more advanced in your desired area–by offering discounts, free events funded by the Club, and free rental equipment. Everyone pushes everyone to try new things and progress their skills on the water.

VK: That sounds great. What is the most exciting part of being a member of the Watersports Club?

AL: Our annual fall break trip is always a blast. Other than that, it’s pretty much always fun. When storms bring the waves, we surf. When the streets flood, we wakeboard, kayak, and paddle board in them. When it’s sunny, we go to Trophy Lakes and partake in the endless options of activities on and around the lakes.

VK: Way to take advantage of Charleston’s flash floods! What are the benefits of being a member?

AL: This year, we implemented a new budgeting strategy to better benefit our members. Paid members received s a $50 credit to Trophy Lakes and free rental equipment for the year, a free shirt, access to several events and trips where the club provides bus transportation & lodging, and activities such as paddleboard and lake rentals. Also, becoming a member of the Club allows you to network and befriend students of all ages. Our officers provide expert coaching while taking on roles that provide them with real world experience in managing responsibility, event planing, marketing, financing, negotiation and other skills that can be implemented in any career.

VK: Who can students contact to get involved with the Watersports Club?

AL: Any student can contact our email – cofcwatersportsclub@gmail.com.
