Particularly around finals time, a certain degree of stress is unavoidable for college students. With much of your grade riding on one exam, it’s easy to buckle under the pressure. But as Honors students, we pride ourselves on having exceptional study habits throughout the year, and finals are no exception. Check out this list with a few tips for final exam success.

  • If you have a friend that’s super intense, avoid setting up a study date with him or her. The constant worry and shaky hands will not help you remain calm and focused!
  • Don’t neglect your health. During exam week more than ever, it’s important to nourish your body with fibrous, green veggies, fruit, water, and plenty of sleep. (Keeping the structure of your normal school week can be helpful so that you make sure you’re eating and sleeping regularly.)
  • Say no to the distractions. Turn off your phone, block Facebook, and tell your friends you won’t be able to hit that party this weekend.  Your environment should be uncluttered and have all the materials you need, so that you’re not going in and out searching for supplies.
  • Take breaks. Sitting inches from your computer all day can strain your eyes and your back. (Walking or jogging is a great way to take a break, exercise, and keep you awake and alert.)
  • Have a plan. Know what subject you’re going to study and when. Knowing exactly what you have to do will keep you from becoming overwhelmed and make it easier to get started.
  • Most professors maintain office hours during finals week. If you stumble on a particular concept while reviewing, head to your prof’s office and ask for clarification. Your visit will be fresh in their minds when grading time rolls around.

Don’t let the stress get the best of you. If you follow these guidelines during finals week, you can keep the nerves at bay and roll into your exams confident, prepared, and relaxed.
