College Resource: Campus Recreation Services

College of Charleston’s Athletic Department has a reputation for competitive excellence. Our varsity teams are some of the best in the nation, and we’re proud to have these student-athletes representing the Cougars across the conference and the country!

But many of our regular students, despite being athletes, can’t make the time commitment to play a varsity sport. That’s why the Campus Recreation Services provides several outlets to get students moving in a more relaxed environment.

Sports clubs are formed by students motivated by a common interest in a particular sport or activity. Each club differs in its emphasis on competition, recreation and instruction or some combination of those three. Popular groups include Crew, Golf, Lacrosse, Water Sports and Soccer, as well as lesser-known activities like Belly Dance or Aikido. (See the full list here.) You can also form a new club if you’re interested in an activity that’s not listed. Many of these groups even compete with other schools.

Intramural sports are another great option. Competitions are informal and are divided in the various individual, dual, and team sports on the basis of skill level. You can sign up a whole team or register as a “Free Agent.” All you need to play is your Cougar Card and a competitive spark.

For those who want to stay in shape without the element of competition, the College offers a plethora of fitness opportunities. The newly-opened George Street Fitness Center has 15,000 square feet of cardio and weight resistance equipment and even has a fully-decked locker room.  (See more information and fitness center hours here.) The College hosts Wellness Wednesdays where they hold yoga classes or seminars about nutrition and wellness. There is also a group fitness schedule for more structured exercise where you can bring your friends!  Your health is imperative for a great experience in college, and these wellness opportunities help keep you on track without being too demanding.

Finally, for those who love the great outdoors, there’s Outdoor Adventure. These outings (with limited spots—so act fast!) include sea kayaking, rock climbing, and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) in the Charleston area. To see upcoming outings, click here.

We hope this page gets you excited to get your fitness on track, whether you’re a prospective student or a returning senior finally getting rid of those pesky “freshman fifteen.” Whatever your wellness goals are, Campus Recreation Services has the right program for you.
