Campus Resource: The Career Center

It’s Thanksgiving Day. You’re shoveling mashed potatoes into your mouth, totally defenseless, when your least-favorite aunt pipes up: “So, what are you going to do after you graduate?”

This question most likely strikes fear into your heart. Choosing your major is intimidating enough, let alone deciding what you’re going to do with it. But, luckily for you, there’s one College of Charleston resource that has the answer to all of your questions.

The Career Center, located on the second floor of the Lightsey Center (located behind the bookstore), is your one-stop shop for all things job- and career-related. According to its website, the mission of the Career Center is “to educate, develop and assist students in successfully meeting the challenges of the ever-changing work environment for which they are preparing.” In other words, the Career Center can arm you with all the skills you need to be successful in school and beyond. The myriad services they offer enhance and complement the academic mission of the College to ensure you’re getting the most of your undergrad, graduate, or alumnus status. Here are just a few of the many perks for current students:

  • Feedback to make your resume more effective and strategies to build it up
  • Opportunities for internships and part-time employment, on and off campus, via CISTERNonline (Internet-based resource easily accessed at school or at home)
  • Career and academic exploration to help you decide what path is best for you—for example, through career assessment inventories like the Myers Briggs Type Indicator or an advanced computer program called FOCUS
  • Networking and interviewing skills to sharpen your professional communication
  • Help with finding and applying to graduate or professional school

Better yet, the Career Center also assists graduate students and even alumni from any major or class year. (That means you can keep coming back even after you cross the Cistern.)

If you are interested in any of these services, it’s easy to make an appointment at the Career Center! You can stop by the physical location—Lightsey Center Room 216, 160 Calhoun Street—or call 843-953-5692. Drop-in hours are Monday through Friday from 1:00-4:00pm for any students who want to stop by with their questions. You can also make an appointment by emailing CareerCenter@cofc.edu. For more information about the CC, visit their website here.

*Also, please note that the Center is holding a Graduate and Professional School Fair on Thursday, October 10 from 1:30-4:00pm. It will be held in the Stern Center Ballroom and feature representatives from various local institutions. Even if you’re not an upperclassman, it is always beneficial to know your options for the future. See you there!
