Adjunct professor Hayden Smith publishes new book about South Carolina rice cultivation

When not tromping through abandoned rice fields, Hayden R. Smith – an adjunct professor in our department – recently published his research in Carolina’s Golden Fields: Inland Rice Cultivation in the South Carolina Lowcountry, 1670-1860 (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
>
Hayden examines the environmental and technological complexity of South Carolina inland rice fields and challenges common misperceptions of their agricultural and cultural simplicity.
>
He also transitioned the research into an exhibit at the Lowcountry Digital History Initiative (LDHI), titled: “Forgotten Fields: Inland Rice Plantations in the South Carolina Lowcountry, ” to complement the Department’s commitment in public history and community outreach. Congratulations, Hayden!
