Dr. Irina Gigova, Associate Professor of History, will present her research on Thursday, April 11 @ 4:00 p.m. in Addleston Library Room 227. Her talk is entitiled, ” The Feeble Charm of National Communism: Writers and Cultural Politics in Communist Bulgaria.”
“I will discuss one of the projects that occupied my attention last year, namely the efforts of the Bulgarian Communist Party to foster a form of “cultural” nationalism and the response these endeavors elicited among writers and other intellectuals. I suggest that an analysis of the cultural field could illuminate some of the reasons why Bulgarian communism did not lead to the ethnic violence that split neighboring Yugoslavia after 1990.”
All are invited and welcome.
