Research on Divination and Fortune-telling in Reformation-Era Europe

Jason Coy conducted research on his new book project on divination in Reformation-era Europe at the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha in Germany. The Forschungbibliothek, which is housed in Schloss Friedenstein, a Baroque palace built between 1643 and 1656 by the Duke of Sachsen-Gotha, Ernst I the Pious, holds a wealth of printed and manuscript sources from the early modern period.

Dr. Coy’s research trip was supported by the German government through a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) and examines the conflict between popular forms of fortune-telling and attempts by theologians to inculcate new cosmological and disciplinary norms in the wake of the Reformation.
