IT does not support use of POP3 or IMAP email programs from off-campus computers, and is eliminating service for off campus computers to send email to other off-campus recipients using gibbes.cofc.edu.
IT can no longer provide Outbound SMTP service using gibbes.cofc.edu for off campus computers.
Authenticated SMTP relay from computers that connect to Exchange from off campus has been disabled. This affects messages sent to addresses outside of cofc.edu. This change only affects you if ALL of the following are true:
a. You are using a computer outside of the campus network
b. You use a program other than Outlook Web Access to send mail from your Exchange (@cofc.edu) email account (e.g. Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird, Apple Mail)
c. You use gibbes.cofc.edu for your Outbound (SMTP) server
If all of the proceedings are true, you will need to change your mail configuration to use an Outbound SMTP server supplied by your network provider.
Mail sent using Outlook Web Access (https://gibbes.cofc.edu) or from computers on campus is not affected.
The College supports use of webmail for email from off-campus locations as the most secure method. To date, faculty and staff have been able to use programs like Outlook Express and Apple Mail to access their Exchange (@cofc.edu) accounts from computers off campus, and we have provided Outbound SMTP mail delivery service using gibbes.cofc.edu for users with a Cougars account and password. This is NOT a configuration that you are likely to have where you do your remote computing unless you took explicit steps to do so; this configuration is NOT suggested by, or actively supported by, IT and this configuration is NOT supported by most Internet Service Providers including Comcast and Knology. For these reasons, disabling this capability is expected to affect very few.
We strongly discourage using POP3 protocol to retrieve your INBOUND mail from gibbes.cofc.edu. POP3 usually removes your messages from your Exchange inbox, making those messages inaccessible from Outlook Web Access or your campus computer. Please configure your mail program to use the IMAP protocol instead.
Please contact the Helpdesk at 3-3375 or helpdesk@cofc.edu if you have questions.
