Hi All!
Hope that everyone has settled into their routines had a good start to the semester. I’m sure you all can relate when we say we’ve been very busy!
There are a few things to highlight from our doings and goings on this month. First and foremost we have 2 important events this weekend:
GSA 1st meeting of the semester
Friday, September 3rd
5:30pm, Stern Center room 206
GSA Fall Kickoff Event
Saturday, September 4th
5:30-8:30pm, SCDNR outdoor classroom
Next the GSA needs your help for a few important things we’ve got lined up for this semester.
The first being the selection of the beneficiary of our Adopt-an-Organization project. Throughout the year GSA has components of our social events that provide a service to charitable organization. Last year at our Holiday Party we gave toys and books to needy children and raised money for Lowcountry Foodbank at our Annual Oyster roast. While being able to contribute to our community through a variety of charities allows us to give a little something to a lot of people, we feel we can make a stronger impact by focusing on just one. To do this, we have decided to “Adopt-an-Organization” for the entire year and provide an opportunity to help our adopted organization at our all of our social events. We’d also like to get more directly involved with actual volunteering.
“So how can you help with this?” you ask. We need your help in choosing the organization! Below are 5 organizations that make an impact locally that we (your Executive Board) have selected. We tried to include a breadth of types of organizations that would appeal to a variety of our graduate students. The links below are to the organization’s web site and to a document they were asked to submit to us detailing their mission statement and how they would use our support. Check these out and let us know what you think! Your Community Outreach Committee will be organizing a vote for the October meeting so be there to show your support for the organization you’d like to benefit!
We also need your help to update the current constitution for GSA. We’ve spent a good part of the summer editing and editing and editing to make some pretty major changes. We’ll detail these changes at our first meeting and vote on the their approval at the October meeting. This document outlines how all of the organizations under the graduate school are to operate so make sure your voice is heard! Let us know if you agree with our changes! You can access the Constitution and Bylaws with the links below. Email your Exec. Board to tell us what you think and plan on coming to the GSA meetings to vote on these changes!
As you can see we have a lot planned for this year! Make sure that you get involved by contacting your Exec Board (gsa.cofc@gmail.com), coming to the GSA meetings (Sept 3rd, Oct 15th, Nov 5th, and Dec 3rd), and getting involved in one of our committees!
Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!
