Vote for Your 2013-2014 EBoard!

Posted by: Robin Garcia | May 21, 2013 | No Comment |

It’s that time ladies and gents! We have been honored to serve as your eboard for the past year, but life has a funny way of moving you along. Below are the photos and bios for our candidates for all four positions. Please take some time to read and vote HERE. We will announce the new eboard next Tuesday, May 28.

PRESIDENT – MARGARET EDLING

Hey y’all, I’m Margaret Edling and I am running for GSA President. I am currently in the History Master’s Program with a concentration in Early Modern Europe. I went to undergrad at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, although I am from Texas. There I earned a History, Secondary Education degree and am a certified high school teacher. I was the Vice President of Scholarship for my sorority in undergrad for a year and a half so I am used to being in a leadership role. I am currently the chair of the representation committee for GSA and serve on the Stern Advisory Board. I have also filled in for Martin at a Board of Trustees meeting and feel I can handle the responsibilities that come along with being the GSA President.

VICE PRESIDENT – LINA WAYMAN

Hello! My name is Lina Wayman, and I’m running for the position of Vice President for the GSA. I’m originally from up north, bouncing around between NJ, NYC, and PA, and I just moved to Charleston this past August for graduate school. I’m currently halfway done with my Masters in Public Administration and am also finishing up the graduate certificate in Urban and Regional Planning. I’m running for this position because I really enjoy being involved in extracurricular activities on campus. All throughout my undergraduate studies I was involved in a variety of different clubs and organizations and thoroughly enjoyed being active in the campus community, so now I would like to do the same at CofC! The GSA really helped me in getting familiar with campus, meeting awesome new friends, and giving back to the local community, and I would love to help cultivate those perks for new and current GSA members in the upcoming school year.

TREASURER – MEL CAMPOS

Mel Campos is running for re-election to continue serving as the GSA Treasurer for the 2013-2014 academic year. She previously served as GSA Treasurer for the 2012-2013 academic year in addition to serving as treasurer for the Master of Environmental Studies Student Association (MESSA) since the spring of 2012. Mel is a third year student in the dual environmental studies and public administration program in addition to the certificate program in urban and regional planning at the College of Charleston. Her research interests include atmospheric chemistry, GIS applications, and bioremediation methods. She grew up in the suburbs of Charleston and is quite happy to be back in Charleston after obtaining her B.S. in biochemistry from Queens University of Charlotte in 2008.
One of her on going goals as GSA Treasurer is to improve the funding application process available through GSA. This past year, more than 40 graduate students applied for grant funding to be used towards conference and meeting attendance or for purchasing materials crucial to their research projects. Mel, alongside the rest of the Executive Board, awarded over $6,000 to further the continuation and dissemination of graduate student research. She feels that it is crucial to refine the current application process and to better inform students about the College’s policies. In addition to working with the various student organizations in utilizing their budget allocations, Mel hopes to provide 1-2 short workshops each semester for graduate students specifically pertaining to the grant application process and steps to take once a grant has been awarded.

SECRETARY – GILLIAN D’ERAMO

My name is Gillian D’Eramo, I am in the English program, and would love to be considered for the position of GSA secretary. I hail from Lexington Kentucky, and prior to my adventure in Charleston, I received a BA in History and English Literature from Miami University in Oxford, and spent summers working internships in legal, HR, and administrative positions. In my free time, I enjoy writing, singing, and social gatherings. I want nothing more than to be a lively and dedicated participant in my school; I enjoy the community environment GSA has provided so far, and would love to help it continue. Along with other English students, I have also helped to reboot the Graduate English Association in order to better keep myself and other students in my program more actively involved as a whole.

MEET YOUR 2012-2013 GSA CANDIDATES

Posted by: Daniel Kassim | April 26, 2012 | No Comment |

Below are the candidates for 2012/2013 GSA Executive Board!  Voting will be on Friday, April 27th.  Details coming soon!

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE:

Martin Erbele

My name is Martin Erbele, I’m in the Master of Public Administration program, and I’m seeking the position of President in the Graduate Student Association (GSA).  This past year was an incredible introduction to the College of Charleston, the greater city, and the people within both.  I’ve been lucky enough to meet a phenomenal group of friends and become involved with the campus.  Over this past year I’ve co-hosted a weekly radio show with a fellow grad student, helped start the new Graduate Urban Studies Club, regularly attended events with the Master of Public Administration Student Association (MPASA), became a trained SafeSpace Ally, and of course worked with the GSA.

GSA has a responsibility to represent every graduate student in every graduate program.  I don’t take that responsibility lightly. I hope to strengthen the reputation of learning and engagement this school has.  I also want to ensure a graduate student voice in CofC policy decisions.  We are a collective group of students that encompasses every age, background, aspiration, lifestyle, and more…and I plan to use that diversity as a strength.  By working with the rest of the GSA officers, school officials, faculty, and staff, I want to help make all of our graduate school experiences the best that they can be.  I’m ready to have fun and do work.  Thank you for your consideration and vote!

VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE:

Still looking.  If anyone is interested, please contact us at  gsa.cofc@gmail.com

TREASURER CANDIDATE:

Mel Campos

Mel Campos grew up in the suburbs of Charleston thanks to the US Navy and is currently a student in the dual Masters program in Environmental Studies and Public Administration at the College of Charleston. She earned her BS degree in Biochemistry, with a concentration in Physical Science, from Queens University of Charlotte. Prior to graduate school, Mel worked in biomedical research specializing in transgenic genotyping, animal husbandry, and aseptic tissue and cell culture.  Her research interests include sustainable transportation, suburban and urban air quality, and alternative fuel and energy usage. Mel currently serves as the treasurer in the Master of Environmental Studies Student Association (MESSA). Mel is also a classically trained musician and performs with the College of Charleston Flute Ensemble and the Charleston Community Band. In her free time, she enjoys reading, baking, and traveling.

SECRETARY CANDIDATE:

Robin Garcia

I’m Robin Garcia, and I would love the opportunity to serve as secretary of the Graduate Student Association. I am originally from DC and have a degree in marine science/biology from the University of Miami. I am currently finishing my second year in the Graduate Program in Marine Biology. I became very active in GSA this past year with encouragement from friends and was able to meet some wonderful people and become involved in school-wide issues and events. GSA is the voice of graduate students in the College of Charleston community, a great resource for grad students, and has become an important aspect of my grad school career. I am ready to give back to GSA and everyone involved.

At Miami, I was involved with the marine science honor society and helped run Ocean Kids, an event that brought low-income students to the campus for a day of marine science education. In addition to GSA, I am also a member of the Marine Biology Graduate Student Association and a SafeZone facilitator, assisting with ally trainings. These roles have required good communication skills, which I will bring to the position. In addition to continuing correspondence between GSA and students, I would like to increase announcements of activities on campus and in the city that are of interest to grad students. I will also work with the rest of the e-board to improve on the amazing things that have been accomplished this year, including the funding of student projects and finding health insurance options. Hopefully I will see you all in the fall as your secretary! And if you haven’t yet, please come to GSA meetings; they’re so much fun!
