Are you interested in becoming a teacher? Did you know you can get your Master of Arts in Teaching degree for free? Yep. Free. Want to learn more?

On Wednesday, March 11, College of Charleston representatives will be on hand to talk with you about opportunities to get initial teacher certification. Program representatives will be on hand to walk you through the process of applying to and paying for either an undergraduate or a graduate degree in education. Not only that, but the fine folks from Kaplan Test Prep will talk with you about ways to prepare for the GRE.

We do ask that you RSVP for this event so we know how much material to bring with us. But feel free to just show up, too. Check-in begins at 5:30, and the event kicks-off at 6:00. You can find us at College of Charleston’s North Campus located at 5300 International Boulevard, right off I-526.

For more information, and to register, visit us at www.cofc.edu/teach.

See you there!

After two wonderful weeks, we’re back in the office ready to make the most out of the new year. Granted, we haven’t all had our coffee yet and are still waking up.

I’m sure you’re eagerly working on planning and sticking to those resolutions, and we want to help. If you’re thinking about going back to school and want to know more about our programs or what materials you need to submit with your application, feel free to ask. You can call us (843.953.5614), email us, or even stop by. We are located in room 310 of Randolph Hall (#40 on any campus map) and are open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you can’t get downtown during those hours, we are open until 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday and Thursday of each month. And if that still doesn’t work for your schedule, just let us know and we’ll schedule an appointment with you for after hours.

If you’re a new student, be sure to register for orientation if you haven’t already! Orientation is this Thursday, and check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Robert Scott Small Auditorium. The presentation will begin promptly at 6:00. And be sure to stick around after Orientation for the Graduate Student Association’s meet & greet at Yo Burrito.

Happy New Year!

Friday afternoon, we hosted 19 students from Fayetteville State University.
For a little over two hours, representatives from our graduate programs and a representative from The Citadel Graduate College covered the basics of grad school. We talked about how to create a competitive application package and what to expect when you’re a grad student.

As a token of our appreciation for visiting us, the FSU students returned with a brand new entrance exam study guide of their choice. If you can’t afford the $1,000+ study sessions with big name organizations, these books are incredibly helpful. I’m using the GMAT Review in conjunction with Princeton Review’s GMAT study guide, and they’re very useful in remembering the math I’ve long forgotten!

ESPN’s Charleston Classic also kicked off on Friday,
and I got to go to College of Charleston’s first game in its brand new Carolina First Center. The Cougars won their first game in the new arena, beating SIUE 72-66. As you can expect, there was a lot of Cougar Pride in the stands. As there should be for $10 a ticket for students (and staff)! Even though graduates can’t get the same deal, I was excited to find one of our MAT grads (and former Teacher of the Year) sitting in front of me. Wonder who I’ll find at the next home game against South Carolina on the 28th at 7:00…

Last, the Graduate Studies Office is hosting its etended hours this week.
On the third Monday and Thursday of each month, our office is open from 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. We welcome prospects and students to visit us in our office in 310 Randolph Hall during the extended hours who normally cannot make the trek downtown during regular business hours. If your schedule still does not accommodate these hours, and would appreciate a face-to-face meeting after hours, let us know and we’ll schedule an appointment.

Hey y’all!

Just wanted to drop a quick, personal note before I hit the road again for my recruiting adventures. I’m just now finishing up my review of all the meetings I had over the last two weeks at University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Davidson, Winthrop and Columbia College. Whew! After being on College of Charleston’s small campus, it’s always refreshing to get lost among the crowds at universities like Tennessee. Or to walk around an all-women’s campus like Columbia College and watch a woman give kickboxing classes to a male friend. Each university has its own personality, and I think that’s one of the top three things I love most about my fall travels. The other two are making new acquaintances with faculty, staff and students, and all the driving I do. If I missed you over the last week, drop me a line and I’ll make sure to touch base with you and send some of our nifty goodies your way. And trust me, we have some cool give-aways like glow-in-the-dark cups!

Anyway, I’m leaving tomorrow to visit with faculty at Elon University and then to talk with students at the North Carolina Opt-Ed Alliance Day. Then next week I’m off to visit faculty at Newberry College, and then to attend Graduate and Professional School Fairs at Appalachian State University, Presbyterian College, Furman University, Wofford College and Converse College. Going to be around? Stop by and see me at the fair! Can’t make it? Drop me an email (deweesen@cofc.edu).

Hasta!
