Meet the GSA Executive Board!

The Graduate Student Association is excited to introduce the new Executive Board Members for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Graduate Student Association (GSA) represents, serves, and advocates for all graduate students at the College of Charleston. Below are the new members of the Executive Board as elected by our graduate students:

Brooke Blosser, President

Brooke Blosser is a third-year student in our Marine Biology program. She has served as the Vice President of the Marine Biology Graduate Student Association from 2019-2020, and was awarded the Barans Marine Biology Fellowship during her second year at the College. She’s an active member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, presenting during the poster session at their 40th Annual North American meeting last year in Toronto, Canada. Her thesis is titled “Microplastic Content in Crassostrea virginica from South Carolina, USA”. She has a hound dog named Bee, loves to read, exercise/play sports, cook, and travel when she’s not working. Brooke hopes to use her platform to brainstorm solutions to graduate student issues, promote diversity and inclusion, and inspire collaboration and camaraderie amongst all graduate students.

Claudia Brown, Vice President

Claudia Brown is a first-year student in our Teaching, Learning, and Advocacy program. A 2017 graduate of the University of Miami, Claudia was key in planning fundraising events for Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) as a student studying Journalism and English. She hopes to use her knowledge and experience, along with her graduate studies, to assist in molding and inspiring future generations to explore new possibilities and talents inside and outside the classroom. On the GSA, Claudia hopes to use her platform to expand COVID-19 safety precautions, implement new professional development opportunities, and prioritize graduate student mental health.

Katrina Williams, Treasurer

Katrina Williams is a first-year student in our one-year MBA program. She comes to the College after a career as a Program Director in the sailing industry, where she has led programs to reverse sales declines, hit goal retention rates, and implementation of strategic plans. She is also a competitive sailor and has represented Bermuda in multiple sailing championships around the world. She enjoys football, barbecue, Dillon Panthers, and country music as a native of Texas. Katrina hopes to bring her finance-focused education to the GSA and to share her financial knowledge with her fellow graduate students.

Jill Goodman, Secretary

Jill Goodman is a first-year student in our Performing Arts Education program. As an undergrad at the University of New Hampshire, she was actively involved on campus, including the Student Activity Fee Committee, and the Mask and Dagger Dramatic Society. During her tenure as secretary for Mask and Dagger, the organization was awarded the “Student Organization of the Year” award, due to their strong programming and work towards promoting inclusion on campus. She likes watching old episodes of Seinfeld, sewing, and supporting Philadelphia sports teams in her free time. Jill hopes to use her platform to advocate for graduate student issues, implement increased cross-program communication via a newsletter or other platform, facilitate CDC-compliant social events, and promote diversity and inclusion.

The GSA meets regularly to discuss the latest in graduate student news, plan events, and talk about graduate student needs. The next GSA meeting is Thursday, October 22nd from 6:00pm-7:00pm via Zoom. Check out the latest Cougar Catch-Up Newsletter here.
