Protecting your bike

Bicycles happen to be a popular mode of transportation around Charleston. For one, they traverse these narrow streets easily. Secondly, you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space, or paying for said space. Unfortunately, bikes are also pretty popular among those with minimal ethical codes.  In a recent email sent to the College of Charleston community, Public Safety reported six bicycle thefts in two weeks.

To keep your bike, you need to do two things: invest in a U-Bolt and a cable lock; secure your bike to an immovable object.  Public Safety included the below graphic to give you an idea of the best way to secure your bike.

Every year, the Student Government Association and the Department of Public Safety host a bike auction. This year’s auction just happens to be tomorrow (Wednesday, September 2). It starts at 11:00 a.m. in Physician’s Promenade and will run until 1:00. If you don’t have a bike, you can find a really good deal at the auction tomorrow.

Also, be aware that the city of Charleston requires that all bicycles of city residents be registered. You can register them at the Police Department at 180 Lockwood Blvd for a minimal fee (the registration is permanent and never needs to be renewed).

The serial number of your bike will then be on file with CPD, so if it is ever stolen, it can be entered into the NCIC system. That way, if it is recovered it can be traced back and returned to its rightful owner.

  2. Thanks for this information, Phil!! Very useful.

Are the racks prevented by the weather? And what do you do with your bike during like winter break if you live in dorms?

  10. No racks are protected by the weather. They are located outside of many of our buildings. Your bike should be fine during breaks, as long as it is registered and locked securely.
