Considering graduate school? Get an application fee waiver!

gre1gre2It’s been a few weeks since we launched the One Course Initiative (OCI), and I’m happy to say we have just a few more application fee waivers available.  If this is the first you’ve heard about the initiative, then be sure to take a few minutes to look at the website.  The Graduate School of the College of Charleston is offering 50 application fee waivers on a first-come, first-serve basis and 12 hours of free GRE study preparation workshops.

While the OCI provides an application fee waiver and free GRE workshops, the underlying premise is for you to earn credits towards a master’s degree while studying for your GRE.  As a non-degree-seeking student, you can apply to a graduate-level class while only having to provide your application and transcripts for admission.  This means you don’t have to wait another six months to a year to get started on your degree.  Most graduate programs will allow between six and 12 credit hours of work taken in non-degree status to be applied toward degree requirements. As you are taking a graduate-level course, you can study for and take the entrance exam, write your personal statement, and secure your letters of recommendation.

gre3gre4Whether you’re an OCI participant, you should take advantage of the non-degree-seeking option if you’re interested in getting started on your master’s.  And if you’re a current college student or recent graduate, my biggest piece of advice is to take your entrance exams! These scores are good for five years, so take the GRE, GMAT, MAT, MCAT, LSAT, whatever test you think you’ll need – take it.  As someone who is studying for the GRE now, I can promise you that you’ll thank yourself later!
