January 14, 2009 – The 21st Century & the Global Strategic Landscape – General T. Michael Moseley (Retired)

Admissions Information Center, Robert Scott Small Building – 6pm

General Moseley, the 18th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, will discuss the global strategic landscape and the challenges in our increasingly complex, dynamic, uncertain environment.  General Moseley will also discuss the impacts of unprecedented change in technology and the exponential growth in access to information across a wide range of economic, cultural and military activities.

January 22, 2009 – Dirty Secrets, Dirty War: The Exile of Robert J. Cox

Addlestone Library, Room 227 – 6pm

Join Robert and David Cox as they speak about Dirty Secrets, Dirty War: The Exile of Robert Cox. This book highlights the story of a man dedicated to protecting the freedom of the press and to protecting his family during the “Dirty War” in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 1976-1983, when an estimated 30,000 people “disappeared.”

February 3, 2009 – Forgotten Treasures – Peg Eastman and John White

Addlestone Library, Room 227 – 6pm

Peg Eastman will discuss how the rediscovery of correspondence, memorabilia and other forgotten treasures from her own family led her to donate those materials to the College of Charleston, a process that has since resulted in the publication of two books and significant degree of scholarly interest.  Dr. John White will discuss these and other recent additions to the College of Charleston’s archives.

February 17, 2009 – Beverage Series, Part I: Celebrating Coffee  – An Evening with John Saunders, Founder of Kudu Coffee

From its discovery on ancient Ethiopian hillside to cafes around the world, coffee has dominated the economics, politics and social structures of entire countries and is the second most valuable exported legal commodity on earth. John Saunders, founder of the popular Kudu Coffee shop in downtown Charleston, will discuss the many facets of this tasty bean and how it has become the vehicle to meet people from around the world.

March 4, 2009 – Beverage Series, Part II: The History of New Orleans Through Sazerac, Elizabeth Pearce

Join Elizabeth Pearce, Senior Curator at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans, as she recounts the delicious and racy history of the Big Easy by way of three of its iconic drinks: the Sazerac, the Hurricane and Café Brulôt.

March 24, 2009 – Beverage Series, Part III: Beverages Ain’t Just for Drinking – Nathalie Dupree, noted chef, author and television host

Addlestone Library, Room 227 – 6pm

Tea and bourbon are more than just iconic southern beverages. They possess a rich history and are the basis for many traditional recipes such as tea creams and bourbon balls. Join Nathalie Dupree as she whips up some delightful treats using these two ingredients. Recipes will be available.

April 7, 2009 – What Buildings Can Reveal – An Evening with Gene Waddell

Addlestone Library, Room 227 – 6pm

Buildings can reveal a great deal even when there is no documentation.  College of Charleston archivist, Gene Waddell, will help uncover how a building was designed, constructed and renovated based on physical evidence provided by the building itself.  His principal example will be the Pantheon in Rome, which is also the subject of his most recent book, Creating the Pantheon: Design Materials and Construction.

April 23, 2009 – Winthrop Roundtable featuring Martha Rivers Ingram

College of Charleston Carolina First Arena – 6pm

Join the Friends of the Library for this semi-annual event featuring Martha Rivers Ingram, Charleston native and chairman emerita of Ingram Industries. An Ashley Hall graduate, Mrs. Ingram now lives in Nashville, TN and is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Vanderbilt University. The evening includes cocktails and dinner. Paid event. May 12, 2009 – Spoleto Sneak Preview

Simons Center for the Arts, Recital Hall, 54 St. Philip Street – 6pm

The 3rd annual Spoleto Sneak Preview, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Friends for the School of the Arts, features SOTA professors and is an insider’s guide to the must-see performances of the 2009 Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto Festivals. A reception in the Simons Center Courtyard will follow. Seating for the event is limited, so please arrive early.

June 3, 2009 – Amori Vini: For the Love of Wine

Addlestone Library Rotunda – 6pm

This evening of wine and music, part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and co-presented with the Friends of the Library, will provide guests with a unique, interactive opportunity to match wine varietals with music. School of the Arts Professor Edward Hart’s compositions are ingeniously paired with three different wines. Tickets: $30 (includes wine samples).
