November 10 – Winthrop Roundtable with Richard Norton Smith

Author, speechwriter and renowned scholar of American history, Richard Norton Smith will discuss the relationship between Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt, telling anecdotes of their friendly-turned-competitive relationship. Mr. Smith will also discuss the similarities – and differences – between the political and economic climates that both FDR and Barack Obama entered upon their elections.

November 4 – Fabric + Thread = JAZZ!

Hard Luck, Good Times: Part III

Dr. Marlene O’Bryant-Seabrook will present the colorful and expertly-crafted quilts that are visual tributes to South Carolina bandleaders and ensemble musicians who became well-known during the jazz heyday of the 1930s. The evening will also feature Dr. Karen Chandler, Associate Professor of Arts Management and Co-Principal of the Charleston Jazz Initiative at the College of Charleston, who will share stunning photographs and other images of the jazz musicians featured in Dr. O’Bryant-Seabrook’s quilts.

Writing against War: Ingeborg Bachmann, 1926 – 1973, is a nationally traveling exhibit about the experience of war in the life and works of celebrated Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann.

Hard Luck, Good Times: Part II

Christopher G. Parham, Theatre Manager for the country’s first theatre building, talks about the ongoing renovations of the Dock Street Theatre and previews plans for its highly anticipated reopening in 2010.

Hard Luck, Good Times: Part I

College of Charleston archivist  Harlan Greene will discuss the 1935 opera by the Gershwins and the Heywards that brought a glorious new sound and story to the world in the midst of economic depression.

September 23 –What is a Moveable Book?

Spend a delightful hour with Eleanor Heldrich as she takes children of all ages through her remarkable collection and reveals the history and mysteries of this unique book form. All of the books are part of her collection, which she’s donated to the Addlestone Library.
